Countertops

Countertops can be made out of many different materials in various shapes, colors and styles. Here are some of the most popular choices.

Laminated countertop.  It is one of the least expensive tops available. It can be purchased in many home improvement stores in precut lengths in variety of colors. Some of them have left or right end precut at 45  angle for corner installation. Usually have 4” backsplash and is relatively easy to install.

Solid wood countertops. They are made out of hardwood like mahogany or oak, sanded smooth, stained and varnished with non toxic finishes. “Butcher block” is most common of wood countertops, can add a character to a home and for some is considered a traditional and elegant option.

Natural stone ( granite, marble, soapstone etc. ) countertops are made out  of big slabs of rock, which means they are cut to size and front and side edge is fabricated to desired shape and size. It is a labor intensive process and requires specialty tools and skilled tradesman. Granite is much harder stone than marble and is used more often for kitchen countertops.

Solid surface countertops. It is a man made material like “Corian”, “Marlux”or “Wilsonart” used not only for countertops but also in bathrooms wet walls. Can be joined together with barely visible seams. Sink can be made from the same material and molded together with countertop creating one piece unit.

Ceramic tiles tops are considered high maintenance tops because of tile grout witch fills spaces between the tiles. Tiles can be laid in patterns to create unique look. In some homes like older “ Spanish hacienda “, hand crafted tiles may be the best option from designer point of view.
