Deck
Deck as an architectural structure is commonly built to extend living area outdoors, but at the same time a tasteful design can add some character to a whole house. Typical deck in residential applications is a wood construction, attached to the house in a form of platform, sometimes with railing, steps and planters as a part of whole landscape design.
Because it is located outside, lumber should be more resistant to weather and insects.
Pressure treated lumber is a popular choice for a substructure like ledger, piers or posts, girders and floor joists. Correct installation with proper connectors and fasteners will guarantee structural integrity.
Decking material which is most visible part of the deck is often made from much more appealing products. For those who prefer natural wood, ipe, redwood, western red cedar or mahogany maybe the best option but it will require periodically sealing to keep it protected.
Man made composite products like Trex or Veranda will be material of choice if low maintenance is the main concern. They come in different colors and one side of the board often has wood grain imprint to imitate natural lumber.
